Health Projects Undertaken by the Chimaroke Nnamani Administration in Enugu State 1999-2003

The Enugu State Government, under the able leadership of His Excellency Dr. Chimaroke Ogbonia Nnamani, built and rehabilitated many hospitals. Dr. Nnamani divided the State into four district health hospitals of 1 - 20-bed capacity each. Each district has a cottage hospital and each senatorial district has one Special Hospital and three Tertiary Referral Health Care Centres, namely: University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, the Park Lane Hospital and the Orthopaedic Hospital, Abakpa Nike.

Already, 19 cottage hospitals have been completed out of the 54 planned.

Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Nsukka, for which the contract for the construction of the 500-bed capacity hospital was awarded at the sum of N150 million, has achieved sixty per cent (60%) completion as at February 2003. The scope of work on the hospital project consists of construction of physical structures of the main administrative block, block of hostels for male and female student doctors, auditorium, library, laboratories, pharmacy and other departments. The teaching hospital has six open wards, one general hall and twelve private halls. Student doctors have their clinical training and house officers work at the Park Lane Hospital.

Obeleagu Umana Cottage Hospital, Ezeagu Local Government Area, is the smallest of the prototype, fully equipped and furnished hospitals in the state. The traditional ruler of Obeleagu Umana, His Royal Highness, Igwe Dr. Patrick Ifo and the entire people of Obeleagu Umana have continued to express profound gratitude to Governor Nnamani's administration for providing facilities, including staff quarters for personnel to establish their presence in the hospital premises and for giving the community roads, water and electricity.

Park Lane General Hospital, Enugu, is one of Governor Nnamani's seventh wonder: from a mere primary health care centre, it was transformed into a General Hospital. The wards, clinics and all physical structures in the hospital were fully rehabilitated by the author of democracy dividends. It was previously coldly neglected by past regimes. The hospital's blood bank was restored and it now records a high patient turn out. The hospital's drugs have to be revolved twenty times over. In addition to these breathtaking changes the administration of Governor Chimaroke Nnamani is at the verge of committing massive investment in landscaping and development of the natural ecosystem of the hospital environment to improve its healing and aesthetic values.
