Re: Why EFCC is after Nnamani ... just fabrications
Monday, February 6, 2006

The attention of the Enugu State Government has been drawn to a report in the Sunday Independent newspaper purporting a wedge between His Excellencies, President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Chimaroke Nnamani on a wild claim of disagreement over the outcome of the Conference of Governors, Ministers, Legislators, Traditional Rulers and Business Leaders of Southern States of Nigeria, last December.

We have no doubt that this publication which was curiously given a front page treatment (fourth lead) in that publication is a calculated attempt at erecting dispute between the Government of Enugu State and the President of the Federal Republic, alongside the institutions he put in place for governance.

In fact, the particular claim that the reason f or the invitation of some officials of government of Enugu State, by the EFCC, which has been well responded to and which is following no known disturbing trend, was to create panic and anguish where the level of understanding and interaction had been without hitches.

We therefore, wish to make it very clear that the Conference of Southern Leaders was conducted and funded by the conveners and participants, being the governors, ministers, legislators, traditional rulers, civil society groups and business leaders, who felt strongly enough to come together to review some areas of political development in the country.

The entire businesses of the day - accreditation of delegates, speeches, debates, counter claims and eventual communiqué - were conducted in the full view of journalists who were in attendance. The entire process was also broadcast live on AIT, the local broadcast media.

Against that background, then, it is a massive wonder to us that any media institution would seek to detract from the truth and impute shady deals where the highest level of transparency was carefully made dominant. It was clear, as it had been attested to, by those who showed interest or those who actively participated that there was no room for any kind of manipulation in business as open as that very successful and well commended Conference.

It is therefore, a laughable assumption to claim that the Federal Agency, EFCC, had come hard on Enugu State for what was not only a no-business-line of the Crime Agency but a purely political development matter for the entire 17 Southern States of Nigeria - not restricted to Enugu, which served as the venue.

As we know, and which is clear to all, EFCC has its business line in looking into financial operations, both in public and private initiatives, and so, is not seen by Enugu State as a weapon of political vendetta, especially where there is no need for one.

It is not only a wonder to us that the highly experienced editors of the well respected newspaper would drag their great institution to an instrument of smear campaign, confirming a disturbing development where such imputations would be made without any clear attempt at cross checking the facts with officials of the Enugu State Government.
