Chimaroke Nnamani’s Return to PDP and his Glory as Senator Elect

MAURICE OKAFOR writes that the first civilian Governor of Enugu state at the inception of fourth republic politics in 1999, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani has returned to the senate as a member of the 9th National assembly. Nnamani is the senator representing Enugu East senatorial district of Enugu state. He has received his Certificate of Returns, [COR] from Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC].

THE AUTHORITY SOUTH EAST recalled that Dr Chimaroke Nnamani have had express and smooth ride to the National assembly in 2007, immediately he finished his second term as civilian governor of Enugu state.

It is noteworthy to mention that His political formation within the party known as ‘Ebeano’ political family of state Enugu PDP as at then held sway on all grounds of Enugu state politics, determined who occupies elective or appointive positions and looked insurmountable.

But since politics is full of intrigues, sooner did Dr Chimaroke fell off with his successor, Ex-Governor Sullivan Chime, while he was at the National Assembly that his political empire established in Enugu state during his regime, started to crash.

Consequent upon the political feud that grew between him and his successor, Ex-Governor Chime, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani floated a new party, ‘People for Democratic Congress[PDC] in his attempt to return to the National assembly for a second term in 2011. He couldn’t make it as he was termed to be defeated by Hon Gilbert Nnaji, who served as House of Rep member, Enugu East/Isiuzo federal constituency, with PDP ticket.

The result was still not in his favour in 2015, even when it was on record that Senator Chimaroke Nnamani was the most popular candidate, who embarked on door to door campaign across all nooks and cranny of Enugu East senatorial district and was admired by the electorates.

In as much as Ex-Governor Chimaroke is so much loved and acceptable across Nkanu land which forms the major bloc of Enugu East senatorial district, his subsequent return to the PDP in 2017, which is the ruling party in Enugu state has made the difference. His long aspiration to return to the National assembly once again is an ambition achieved.

However, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani describes the Enugu state Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as a trustworthy friend and the architect of his political rejuvenation.

In one of his campaigns to Enugu South local government area, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani stated,

‘We thank the person who made it possible for us to come on board again, and that person is Rt Hon ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The light has been put on, we shall roll out our drums. We thank him because ‘Ebeano’ family is alive and well’.

He stated further, ‘Who made our show to roll out? It is Gburu Gburu our governor. What shall we do for him? We will be praying for him and on the 9th of March, we should all vote him in and our House of assembly candidates. Then on the 23rdof February, you vote for me for senate, vote Offor Chukwuegbo for House of Reps. What we have is a joint ticket. We are conjoined twins; we are conjoined triplets. So if you are voting for me, it means you are voting for Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, you are voting for Offor and you are voting for Sam Ngene’.

Political watchers in the state said Senator Chimaroke Nnamani lived up to these expectations through his additional vigorous campaign for Governor Ugwuanyi, himself and all other PDP candidates across Enugu East senatorial district, prior to the 2019 February,23 /March 16 General elections, which to a large extent dampened the envisaged chances of the opposition in his senatorial district.
