January 24, 2006

Governor Chimaroke Nnamani has said that the establishment of District Health System was a deliberate effort of his administration to extend effective healthcare services to all parts of the state.

Governor Nnamani stated this in Enugu while commissioning some ambulances and other operational vehicles for the operation of the District Hospitals in the state.

The Governor disclosed that the seven District Hospitals located at Udi, Agbani, Enugu Ezike, Enugu Urban, Ikem, Awgu and Nsukka have been equipped with modern medical facilities as well as qualified medical doctors and other health workers.

According to the Governor, the District Hospitals would serve as centers from where other government owned health institutions located in parts of the state would be served.

The State Chief Executive described the commissioning of the vehicles as a major milestone and a step further towards the effective implementation of his administration’s health reform programme.

He said that government was committed to the success of the District Health System and therefore expressed the hope that all hands would be on deck to achieve affordable healthcare delivery for all.

The Governor advised that the vehicles must be used strictly for purpose they were meant, adding that those handling them must ensure adequate care and proper maintenance.

Governor Nnamani used the occasion to thank the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Festus Uzor, the staff of the Ministry of Health and government’s international development partners for their major complementary roles towards the success of the health reform.

Earlier in his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Health Dr. Festus Uzor said that the vehicles were part of the support to the state by the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) and the World Bank-funded Health System Development Programme (HSDP).

Dr. Uzor said that Enugu State is on the lead in the area of health reform in the country and commended the governor for his special interest and efforts to bring healthcare to the door steps of the people in the state.

The Health Commissioner therefore assured the Governor that his Ministry would continue to identify with all his healthcare programmes and also ensure that the vehicles were put into good use.
