Enugu gets committee on mineral resources management

The Enugu State Government has inaugurated a six-member committee on Mineral Resources and Environmental Management.
The Members of the Committee, who were drawn from Federal and State Ministries of Solid Mineral Resources Development and Environmental Management, will serve on advisory capacity to state and federal governments on mineral resources exploitation and environmental management.

Speaking while inaugurating the committee, the State Governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, charged the members to come up with ideas that would help in the exploitation of huge solid mineral deposit in the land.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Chief Okechukwu Itanyi, noted that Enugu State was blessed with mineral resources and subjected to devastating erosion menace. He therefore urged the committee to assist the state to fight environmental problems in the state.

The State Chief Executive noted that the state had good working relationship with the federal government in areas of health, education and environmental management, among others, and assured the committee of the state government's support and assistance.

He assured them that all the stakeholders involved would be made available to them and expressed the hope that working with the committee, the state would definitely benefit immensely from the utilization of solid minerals and improvement of the standard of the environment.

Responding, the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Mrs. Eduk Ekpo, announced the tremendous improvement made in the Ministry through its reform programmes. They included launching of the nation's mineral deposits on the world map, strengthening their geological data generation, development of new mining policy and establishment of new department. Mrs. Ekpo, who stood in for the Minister in-charge of the ministry, Dr. Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, outlined some of the functions of the committee which included advising the Minister to respect the Mining Act, providing advise to the Local Government Areas and communities on the implementation of programmes for environmental protection and sustainable management of mineral resources, among others.

She congratulated Enugu State for being the first state in the country to inaugurate the committee and thanked Governor Nnamani for his assistance to the Ministry in tackling the exploitation of mineral deposits in a holistic form.

Other members of the committee include Dr. Mrs. I. Ihuoma, Acting Director, Federal Ministry of Solid Mineral Resources and Development, Mr. E. N. Ilo, Mr. Joseph Onwuka, Zonal Controller, Federal Ministry of Environment, Enugu, Mr. Herbert Eze, Head Department of Mining in the State Ministry of Environment, and Mrs. Charles Isife.
