Nnamani charges state electoral body on council polls
April 28, 2006
The Enugu State Governor, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani has charged the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) to brace up for the challenges of a free and fair election in the forthcoming local government election.

Dr. Nnamani gave this charge while inaugurating an eight man board of the commission which has Chief Abel Nwobodo as its chairman at the Government House, Enugu.

The State Chief Executive observed that in the next few weeks, the tenure of the present local government council would expire, thereby necessitating a fresh election of new council members.

He expressed satisfaction with the performance of the commission in the last local government election in the state which was conducted with minimal controversy and expressed the hope that the new board would in the same manner continue to perform the job excellently.

Governor Nnamani noted with delight the transparency and integrity exhibited by the commission during the past local government election, pointing out that in the election the opposition parties emerged victorious in some wards.

The Governor congratulated Chief Nwobodo whom he described as an experienced administrator and urged him to bring his wealth of experience to bear as the pioneer chairman of the commission.

In his speech after the inauguration, the ENSIEC boss, Chief Nwobodo expressed their immeasurable appreciation to Governor Nnamani for the trust and confidence reposed on the commission and her members.

Chief Nwobodo described their job as very challenging but pledged their determination to continue to do justice to election processes in the state by maintaining a high level of transparency and incorruptibility.

Chief Nwobodo disclosed that during the last local government general election in the state and three subsequent bye elections, no single post-election petition was recorded. This, he said, was a manifestation of the credibility and general acceptance of the election result by the people.

He therefore reassured their resolve not to fail the state and the people but appealed to all the stakeholders in the election to always do their home work very well.

In the reconstituted board, some old members including the Chairman were retained while new members were also appointed.
