History, as IMT repossesses main campus from ESUT
April 26, 2006
The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu has formally repossessed its old Main Campus, Independence Layout, Enugu, which had for over two decades served as the Temporary Site of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

The take over of the ESUT temporary site by IMT was sequel to the relocation of the university to its ultra modem permanent site at Ebeano City in the outskirts of Enugu.

Speaking at the official handing-over ceremony of the campus which was given to the university following its establishment in 1980, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, restated the determination of the state government to continue to give education priority attention in the state.

Dr. Chukwunweike described the ceremony which marked the return of IMT to its original Campus One as very historic and a demonstration of Governor Nnamani’s resolve to leave an indelible mark in educational needs of the people.

The commissioner pointed out that Governor Nnamani was the only person who saw the need to give ESUT her befitting academic environment which other successive administrations had failed to do, adding that the ESUT permanent site when fully completed will compare favourably with any university anywhere in the world.

He therefore used the occasion to challenge the management, staff and students of the two institutions to take the advantage of their new academic environments to excel and improve on their academic standards.

The commissioner commended the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Ikechukwu Chidobem, for the enthusiasm with which his staff and students carried out the relocation exercise to the permanent site.

Dr. Chukwunweike also thanked the Rector of IMT, Dr. Ezenwaeze Onyisi, for the prompt movement into their new offices and assistance to government to maintain the peace in the institution.

In his speech before the handover, the ESUT Vice Chancellor, Professor Chidobem, noted that the repossession by the IMT of its original main campus was an eloquent testimony of the zeal with which the university community embraced, the huge transformation which Governor Nnamani brought into the education sector in the state.

Professor Chidobem expressed happiness that the spirit of the take-over showed understanding and maturity between the management of the two institutions, adding that with the relocation exercise, they now had enough facilities to enhance teaching and learning in the schools.

He said that ESUT was leaving behind all the facilities already in place intact for IMT and thanked Governor Nnamani for his special interest and huge investment in education of which ESUT is a major beneficiary.

Also the Rector of the IMT, Dr. Onyisi in his speech shortly after accepting the keys said that with the handing-over ceremony it was no longer a story but a reality, pointing out that from that movement his office and that of his principal officers had moved to the Independence Layout which they forfeited to ASUTECH and ESUT many years ago.

Dr Onyisi thanked Governor Nnamani for the new ESUT permanent site which is of world standard and also commended him for making it possible for IMT to return to its former Campus One.

He noted that the facilities available to them afforded them the opportunity for greater service to excel so as to meet the aims and the aspirations of government, the people of the state and the IMT founding fathers.
