April 28, 2006

Governor Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu State has charged the authorities of the Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT) College of Medicine to redouble efforts at ensuring that the products of the college are of international standard.

Governor Nnamani gave the charge when he signed into law a bill called Bill Number Four 2006 establishing the ESUT College of Medicine at the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, Enugu.

The Governor observed that with the near completion of the ultra-modern medical complex and the promulgation of an enabling law, the medical school was now ready to hire more high caliber professionals and achieve the full accreditation of its courses.

He described the signing into law of the bill establishing the ESUT College of Medicine as the beginning of efforts to achieve greater heights in the area of medicine as well as provide some level of independence to the college.

"I believe that today, we have practicalized our determination and effort to build a world class college of medicine," he said.

The Governor told the college authorities that the state government had fulfilled its own side of the bargain by providing an enabling law that guarantees some level of autonomy to the college, provide infrastructural facilities and conducive atmosphere for teaching.

He therefore appealed to them to reciprocate these government gestures by living up to expectation and above all, complement government's commitment to develop human capacity in the college.

He used the occasion to commend two eminent medical experts present at the occasion, Professor Wilson Onuigbo, a renowned pathologist, and Professor D.C. Nwafor, a surgeon, as per excellence professionals who had given the college and the society their invaluable contributions in the field of medicine and healthcare services.

Presenting the bill earlier, the Speaker Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon Abel Chukwu, commended Governor Nnamani for his foresight and huge investments in the college, healthcare delivery and education in general.

The Speaker said that the bill sponsored by the Executive was extensively and exhaustively deliberated upon by the members before it was passed and commended the excellent relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in the state.
