Nnamani pledges support to INEC
March 9, 2006

Governor Chimaroke Nnamani has pledged the state government's financial and moral support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the run-up to next year's general elections.

He gave the assurance in Enugu when he received in audience a delegation of INEC who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Enugu.

The Governor acknowledged the important role the electoral body had played as an independent referee in midwifing and promoting the democratic process in Nigeria.

Governor Nnamani further stated that the state government had always cooperated with and supported INEC in all its endeavours, adding that it would continue to do so
especially at this crucial time of preparation for the 2007 elections.

He added that since democracy is about inclusion and competition, by widening the political spectrum the electoral body helps to foster democracy and a peaceful democratic terrain.

Earlier in his speech, the Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Abdul Bulama, had stated that he had been posted to Enugu as part of the recent nationwide relocation of INEC Commissioners.

Dr. Bulama disclosed that INEC was fully committed to the conduct of free, fair and credible general elections in 2007.

Towards this end, the commissioner noted that INEC had outlined a systematic process aimed at achieving the set goal.

One of these, he added, was the hosting of a stakeholders election forum, which he described as an all embracing participatory forum for discussing all election matters at ward, local government, state and national levels.

He however noted with regret that this programme had not been implemented in Enugu State because of logistic problems and appealed for support from the Governor.

While commending Governor Nnamani for what he described as his "intimidating developmental strides" in Enugu State, Dr. Bulama urged him to keep it up, even as he re-stated that INEC was committed to providing an enabling environment for the successful conduct of the 2007 general elections.
