Nnamani wants realistic remuneration for office holders

The Enugu State Government has called on members of remuneration and monetization committee of Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to work out a realistic and acceptable package for political office holders in the country.

The State Governor, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, made the call when he received members of the committee assigned to review the remuneration package for the political appointees.

The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Chief Okechukwu Itanyi, reminded them of the importance of their assignment pointing out that upwards review of the package was necessary going by the present economic situation in the land.

He told the committee members that their job was very critical to good governance and sustainable development of the country and therefore should be taken seriously.

The State Chief Executive noted that the exercise is well timed and promised that Enugu State Government will give them all the needed support to workout an acceptable remuneration package.

He used the occasion to commend the Chief Executive of Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission for what they were able to achieve so far and urged
him not to relent.

Briefing the Governor earlier, the leader of the team and Federal Commissioner in the Commission, Mr. John Markile said that they were in Enugu in continuation of their
consultation tour of states in the South East zone to collect information and data from the stakeholders that would help them produce a new remuneration package for political office holders.

Mr. Markile, stated that the exercise was in line with the law establishing the commission which provided a periodic review of indices in package, such as salary, allowances, vehicle loans among others.

According to the commissioner, the committee was also put in place to address and correct all the lapses and criticisms that followed the present remuneration package due to such officers in government.

He disclosed that other groups of the committee from the commission are in other geopolitical zones of the country, adding that they had visited Anambra and would be going to Ebonyi, Abia and Imo States once they are through with Enugu.

The Commissioner therefore appealed to the governor and the state government for cooperation by providing information that would help them in their report.

He stated that at the end of the day reports from all the committees would be collated and forwarded to the President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who will in turn send it to the National Assembly.

Mr. Markile, commended the State Governor Chimaroke Nnamani for his people oriented government and landmark achievements in the area of infrastructural development and provision of social amenities to the people of Enugu State.
