Enugu moves to establish satellite towns
January 26, 2006
The Enugu State Executive Council has approved the establishment of New Enugu Satellite Development Commission for the opening of new satellite towns around the metropolis.

The State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Igbonekwu Ogazimorah announced this while briefing the press after the meeting of the State Executive Council.

Mr. Ogazimorah said that already a committee known as New Enugu Satellite Committee has been set up to scout for locations for the satellite towns and work out other modalities for the operation of the commission.

The Commissioner said that government decided to establish satellite towns to help decongest the city and reduce pressure on available facilities in the metropolis and the erection of make shift shops and kiosks within the residential areas of the state capital, the Executive Council reminded members of the public that nobody is at liberty to erect such structures indiscriminately in different parts of the state.

The Council noted that whereas it is the policy of the state government to allow micro-business initiatives to thrive, it will not tolerate a situation where such enterprises will block major roads or deface the aesthetics of the city.

He said that government will not dislodge economic activities in those make shift shops or pull down the existing ones though it does not mean that they will not be orderly.

Accordingly to the Commissioner, he said, the Executive Council has directed that henceforth those planning to put up make shift shops or kiosks must get in touch with appropriate government agencies (Ministries of Lands, Environment and the Enugu State Environmental Protection Agency) for guidelines and permission.

The Commissioner said that the Executive Council also received reports of the activities of youths and communities who engage in re-allocation and sale of lands belonging to government.

Mr. Ogazimorah said that the Council recalled a case where a certain community attacked government officials at the State Fire Service Training Center, Uwani Enugu, adding that government will not tolerate such an action.
