January 25, 2006

Governor Chimaroke Nnamani has described the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) as a role model in the pursuit of industrial excellence and public enlightenment.

Governor Nnamani made this declaration during a courtesy call by the Chairman of the organization, Chief Ebeneze Babatope, at the Governor’s Office, Enugu.

The Governor noted with delight the contributions of the organization in ensuring the production of high quality products in the country and pledged his government's assistance to help improve their services to the people.

He commended Chief Babatope for his remarkable achievements, adding that his contributions to the polity and in the building Nigerian project are worthy of note.

Earlier in his speech, Chief Babatope had briefed the Governor on the activities of his organization. Chief Babatope said the engineering laboratory of the SON in Enugu State is to be modernized and upgraded to international standard.

Chief Babatope said that under the modernization and upgrading exercise all the existing facilities in the laboratory will be refurbished and new ones provided.

This he said had become very necessary so that the office could cope with the services it was expected to render in the states of the South-East and South-South geo-political zones of the country.

On the production and sale of sub-standard goods in the country, the Chairman said that this had been a source of concern to government and other well-meaning Nigerians.

He said that it was in an effort to check this ugly trend that the Federal Government mandated the organization to take urgent steps to restore discipline and ensure high quality of locally manufactured goods.

Chief Babatope said that the modernization of the engineering laboratory which will be completed by June this year would play a major role in meeting the mandate.

He therefore thanked Governor Nnamani for the cooperation his government has given the organization in the state so far, while requesting for the Governor’s assistance in securing a land to enable the organization build a housing estate in Enugu.

The Chairman, who disclosed that he had been visiting Enugu for years, used the occasion to commend Governor Nnamani for his contributions the socio-political and intellectual development of the country, adding that it is only a man of vision and clear goals can achieve so much for his people.

He said: “Here is a young man who has been making waves in Enugu State and all over the country. I can recount all your achievements and I have read everything you have written. During your time, Enugu has become the hub of industrial growth. The city has increased in business activity with a lot of transformations in the industrial sector and infrastructural development. Coming from the Nike Lake Hotel, I saw the streets bubbling with life and commercial activity. “
